Vermicomposting compared to other composting

I have a number of compost options in my yard and I like the worm composting the best.

Tumbler:  It is easy to contain the compost and it looks nice and neat, however here are some of the downfalls:

  • sometimes there are maggots or flies in it

  • it needs to be turned on a regular basis

  • it needs to be kept slightly wet, like a damp sponge

  • even a large tumbler doesn’t hold much if you are adding leaves and grass clippings

  • it can take a long time for scraps to turn to compost

Compost pile (contained in large bins):  great for leaves, grass clippings, and large quantities of scraps, however, here are some of the drawbacks:
